Our Story
The Nanaimo Food Hub was born from a simple yet powerful idea: to create a vibrant, community-centered space that connects local farmers, food producers, and residents through fresh, sustainably grown food. What began as a small initiative led by a handful of passionate community members has grown into a collaborative movement focused on strengthening our local food system.
Our journey started with listening—listening to the challenges faced by small and mid-sized farmers, the concerns of food producers trying to reach markets, and the voices of residents seeking healthier, locally sourced options. We recognized a common need: infrastructure that could support aggregation, storage, distribution, and digital access to local products year-round.
In response, we formed the Nanaimo Food Hub: a space where food, community, and innovation meet. From coordinating Summer Friday Farm Markets and managing digital pre-sales based on RECO Ring model to developing cooperative distribution systems, our work is centered on helping producers thrive while making local food more accessible to all.
Today, the Hub supports dozens of local farmers and producers, provides new ways to market and sell their goods, and fosters partnerships that promote food security, economic growth, and regenerative agriculture. Together, we are building a resilient food future for Nanaimo—one that’s rooted in community and grown with care.
Join us as we continue to nourish our region, one connection at a time.
